What is Laser Engraving? Everything You Need to Know
Share
Laser engraving is one of those techniques that sounds technical but produces results that feel deeply personal. It's how we create the fine, permanent detail on everything from memorial plaques to wedding gifts at Moon Groves.
How Does It Work?
A laser beam is directed across the surface of a material — whether wood, slate, glass, metal or leather — burning or vaporising a precise layer to leave a permanent mark. The depth & detail of the engraving is controlled by the software & the power of the laser. Our 150W CO₂ laser can work at incredibly fine resolutions, which means we can engrave photographs, intricate logos & detailed artwork as well as simple text.
What Can Be Laser Engraved?
Almost any flat surface can be engraved. At Moon Groves we regularly engrave timber, slate, glass, anodised metal & leather. Some of our most popular engraved pieces include reclaimed slate house signs, personalised serving boards & Italian leather coasters. If you're not sure whether your material is suitable, just get in touch — we're happy to advise.
Is Laser Engraving Permanent?
Yes. Unlike printing or stickers, laser engraving removes material from the surface. It won't fade, peel or wash off. That's what makes it ideal for gifts people want to keep for years — & for memorial pieces that truly last.
Can I Supply My Own Design?
Absolutely. We accept vector files (SVG, AI, PDF) & high-resolution images. If you have a logo, a signature or a piece of artwork you'd like engraved, send it over & we'll let you know if it's suitable. We can also help with the design if you're starting from scratch. Every order comes with a free digital proof via WhatsApp before we cut anything.
