Personalised reclaimed slate house sign engraved in Devon – handmade gifts near Plymouth and the South Hams by Moon Groves

Personalised Gifts in Plymouth & the South Hams: Handmade on the Edge of Dartmoor

If you've ever searched for personalised gifts in Plymouth & ended up scrolling past the same mass-produced mugs, generic photo prints & faceless national websites, this post is for you. Because just fifteen minutes up the A38, in a workshop at The Clay Factory in Ivybridge, there's a small team making personalised pieces by hand, the slow way — & we'd love you to find us.

What "personalised" means to us

To a lot of the gift industry, personalisation means a name printed on a template. To us, it means a conversation. Tell us who the gift is for & what they mean to you, & we'll design something around that — their name in the right lettering, a date that matters, a paw print, a silhouette of their favourite tor. Then we send you a free digital proof via WhatsApp before we cut anything, so you see exactly what you're getting & can tweak it until it's right. Only then does it go on the laser.

That proof step is the difference between a gift that's personalised & one that's truly personal. And it's free, every time.

Made here, not shipped in

Every piece is designed & made in our Ivybridge workshop on the southern edge of Dartmoor, using a 150W CO₂ laser that lets us work at a scale most gift engravers can't — from a slate coaster to a full live-edge oak gate sign. We work in sustainably sourced timber, reclaimed Devon slate, glass & leather, & everything is made to order. Nothing sits in a warehouse, because every piece is different.

If you're local — Plymouth, Plympton, Ivybridge, the South Hams villages or anywhere along the edge of the moor — you're buying from neighbours, not a fulfilment centre. And if you're further afield, every UK order ships free.

Gifts people actually keep

A few of the pieces we make most often for customers around Plymouth & the South Hams:

House & gate signs. A reclaimed slate house sign or rustic oak gate sign is the gift that greets someone every single day. Our slate has already survived decades on Devon roofs — it'll handle whatever the weather brings next.

Serving & charcuterie boards. Engraved with initials, a surname or a message, a handmade board comes out every time there are guests at the table.

Memorial pieces. Some of our most important work. Plaques, crosses & keepsakes for people & pets, made with the quiet care these pieces deserve.

Wedding & anniversary keepsakes. Signs, boards & keepsake pieces engraved with names & dates — the kind of gift still on the wall in thirty years.

Why buy local instead of clicking the first ad?

Honestly? Because it's better. The big personalised-gift websites are print farms: your order is one of thousands that day, untouched by human judgement. When your order comes to us, a real person reads it, designs it, checks the proof with you, selects the timber or slate, runs the laser, hand-finishes the piece & packs it. If something about your idea won't work, we'll tell you & suggest what will. That honesty is part of the service.

You're also keeping your money in the local economy — supporting a small Devon workshop, local timber suppliers & the creative community at The Clay Factory. You can see that local spirit in action in our recent collaboration with Handmade Fishing Floats, another Ivybridge maker just across the way.

How to order

Browse our personalised gifts collection & order online — personalisation boxes are on every product page. Got something unusual in mind? Get in touch & tell us about it; bespoke one-offs are some of our favourite work. Either way, you'll see your free design proof before we make a thing.

Handmade in Ivybridge. Loved across Plymouth, the South Hams & far beyond.
