Made for the Hobby: Bespoke Stable Plaques, Beer Flights and More
Share
When someone is genuinely passionate about a hobby — whether that's keeping horses, brewing their own beer or a Friday-night darts league — a generic off-the-shelf gift rarely hits the mark. The people who care most about the detail are exactly the ones who notice when something's been made with care, & that's where a bespoke, laser-engraved piece earns its place.
Here are a few of the niche projects we most enjoy taking on at our Ivybridge workshop.
Stable name plaques that survive a Devon winter
Most cheap stable signs don't last. They split, fade or rot within a couple of winters, which is no good on an exposed field gate. The fix is solid, deep-engraved timber — ideally oak — finished with a UV-resistant exterior oil so it can take everything a wet Devon winter throws at it.
Done properly, a stable or field name sign can carry the horse's registered name, a breed silhouette or even the owner's emergency contact details, all engraved deep enough to stay legible for years. It's a small thing, but it makes a yard feel properly looked after.
Custom beer flights for the home bar
Home bars & craft beer have boomed, & a well-made beer flight is one of those gifts that gets used again & again. The details are what separate a good one from a gimmick: recessed pockets sized properly for tasting glasses so nothing tips, a small integrated slate or chalk panel for naming each beer & a sturdy handle that's comfortable to carry a full set on.
Engrave a home bar name, a family name or a nod to a favourite brewery into the timber & it stops being a tray & becomes a centrepiece. Better still, we can build one to fit the glasses you already own, which most off-the-shelf flights simply can't.
And whatever else you're into
The same thinking applies right across the board. A custom wooden darts case to protect a prized set, a display piece for fishing or shooting kit — like our handcrafted display plaques — a scoreboard for the games room: if it's made of timber or slate & it matters to someone, we can usually make a version that's properly personal to them.
Why hobbyists notice the craftsmanship
Computer-guided laser engraving gives clean, crisp lines that hold up to heavy handling in a stable, a workshop or an outdoor bar. That precision is exactly what a dedicated hobbyist appreciates, because it means the piece looks as good after a season of real use as it did on day one.
